Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Develop the skill for identical and equivalent description of the social reality or for identical and equivalent orientation in the social experience and problematic or to create and build an objective description of the image of the social experience.
  2. Shape and develop skills to search and discover constitutive, causative and topical explanatory relationships with the purpose of creating multifaceted interpretative mechanisms of the social reality at a level in which the students will be in a position to structure fundamental interpretative theoretical schemata and examples.
  3. 3. Assimilate the potential by the effectiveness of the practical use of the theoretical knowledge (the life of theory in action) – the aim of the module is not only to bring the students up to the level of enabling them to conquer specific interpretative theoretical schemata, but also to situate them, through their preparation, in a state of readiness in which they will be able to use effectively analogous theoretical hypotheses and methodological tools in solving practical issues of current affairs, as well as in acquiring skills of orientation in problematic situations of current affairs.

Course Contents

Composite and methodological view of European philosophy

Philosophy of social knowledge – new methods and models: the new relationship between philosophy and science; the post-modern understanding of social practices (culture, politics, authority, democracy, daily routine).

Focused and detailed introduction into and analysis of the field of post-modern discourse and of its various characterizations and sub-specifications: Psychoanalysis and Freudianism, social knowledge, politics and philosophy, and post-modern culture.

The position of Cyprus as a cross-roads of heterogeneous tendencies and forces.
