Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Form a sense of place and of the cultural landscape in relation to the location, ie mountainous, hilly, plains.
  2. Recognize the local architecture of the rural architecture of Cyprus, and analyse the theory and techniques and technologies of their creators.
  3. Analyse projects in urban areas as developments of rural architecture interwoven with elements of medieval and modern Cyprus, identify the theory and techniques and technologies of their creators.
  4. Identify the interactions, in the concepts of form and space, of humanity and the local environment, as well as analyse the need for harmonious design taking into account human needs and scale of the local area.
  5. Collect, investigate and record information on historical and theoretical issues from a wide range of sources.

Course Contents The aim of the course is to analyze the architecture and art of every cultural period, from the ancient Greek civilization to the renaissance period, and show how within each, culture-art and architecture creates within his own space and time, but also enriches the architectural structure with the pre-existing knowledge of older or parallel cultures. Also it highlights the pioneering techniques, appliances and construction methods and materials of each period. The architecture of Cyprus will be introduced in each historical period as well as an independent entity.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods The taught part of the course is delivered to students by means of lectures, conducted by electronic presentations. Lecture notes and pictures are given to students in electronic form.
Lectures are supplemented by field trips to villages and cities where students study typology and morphology of traditional architecture and deliver their analysis as part of the course requirements.
