Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Architecture in the beginning of the twentieth century.
  2. The social and economic conditions of living in Europe Word War I 1914-1918, Word War II 1940-44.
  3. Industrial Revolution.Urban Development, the gathering of people in cities, in search of a better living.
  4. The industrial production of daily life artifacts. The increased demand of housing Units. The use of new methods and materials for housing
  5. Modernism – Reinforced Concrete, Functionalism, The free plan, Pilotis, New Morphology.These are the main principles established since 1920
  6. Parallel movements – schools, The Bauhaus, Le Corbusier, - CIAM, Brutalism, Cubism
  7. Parallel Developments in all Arts, Music, Fine Art – painting – Sculptures, Literature, Philosophy e.c.
  8. The ability to recognise the buildings built on the principles of Modernism. To analyze, to discuss, to present the Architecture of the Modern Movement.
  9. Case studies: To Discover the Principles of Modern Movement in the Architecture of the cities of Cyprus Nicosia, Limassol,Famagusta, Larnaca.
  10. Case studies: The architectural of well known Architects in Europe, USA, Greece , Cyprus.

Course Contents

         Identify “Urban” development in Nicosia

         Identify elements of Modern Movement (M.M) on building in the city

         Critical analysis of the build environment

         Comparative analysis of Public Architecture

         Record the architecture of Modern Movement –-sketches by hand , pen pencil paper - photographic images

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

         Through slide presentation of images of life at the beginning of twentieth century plans, sections and photos of iconic building of the Modern Movement.

         Walk through Nicosia to identify relevant buildings

         How the principles of the new Architecture were/are matched with local traditions and traditional material. Especially the use of local stone

         Critical Discussions on the first buildings of Le Corbusier

         The single house

         The massive housing
