Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Recognize the architecture of the ancient western world from the beginning of civilization in Mesopotamia until the gothic period and analyse the theories, techniques, technologies and materials of their creators.
  2. Identify the main building typologies and morphologies of ancient architecture and their relationship to their art philosophy, culture and civilization.
  3. Explain the principles inherent in the concepts of form and space for the ancient architect, as well as understand the continuation of the these principles from one civilization to the next .
  4. Collect, investigate and record information on historical and theoretical issues from a wide range of sources.
  5. Develop the ability to participate in multidisciplinary teams.

Course Contents The aim of the course is to analyze the architecture and art of every cultural period, from the renaissance and baroque to the 20th century, and show how within each, culture-art and architecture creates within his own space and time, but also enriches the architectural structure with the pre-existing knowledge of older or parallel cultures. Also, it highlights the pioneering techniques, appliances and construction methods and materials of each period. The architecture of Cyprus will be introduced in each historical period as well as an independent entity.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods The taught part of the course is delivered to students by means of lectures, conducted by electronic presentations. Lecture notes and pictures are given to students in electronic form.
Lectures are supplemented by field trips to antiquities on the island
