Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Recognize the architecture of the 20th c. in Europe and America, and analyse the theory and techniques, technologies and materials of their creators.
  2. Identify the main currents of modern architecture and their relationship to art philosophy, culture and society
  3. Explain the principles inherent in the concepts of form and space for humanity, as well as understand the need for harmonious design taking into account modern human needs and other complex issues of the end of last century such as environment, energy, multi ethnicity.
  4. Collect, investigate and record information on historical and theoretical issues from a wide range of sources.
  5. Develop the ability to participate in multidisciplinary teams

Course Contents

The architecture and art in America up until the second world war (1936): The work of Frank Lloyd Wright, traditional revival, the skyscraper development -New York-Chicago

The architecture and art in Europe up until the second world war (1936) : Expressionism, cubism,futurism, the Bauhaus, the beginning of the moderm movement.

The modern movement in architecture and art in Europe up after the second world war (1945) : The modernist approach in Europe and the famous architects of the period

The architecture and art of the period of postmodernism and the end of the millennium:   Postmodernism in America

The modern architecture of Cyprus in the 20thcentury up to and including the 60’s decade: The first modernist architects of Cyprus

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of the course is delivered to students by means of lectures, conducted by electronic presentations. Lecture notes and pictures are given to students in electronic form.

Lectures are supplemented by field trips to the city centre where students can observe Cypriot modernist architecture.
