Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Recognize the architecture of the ancient western world from the beginning of civilization in Mesopotamia until the gothic period and analyse the theories, techniques, technologies and materials of their creators.
  2. Identify the main building typologies and morphologies of ancient architecture and their relationship to their art philosophy, culture and civilization .
  3. Explain the principles inherent in the concepts of form and space for the ancient architect, as well as understand the continuation of the these principles from one civilization to the next .
  4. Collect, investigate and record information on historical and theoretical issues from a wide range of sources.
  5. Develop the ability to participate in multidisciplinary teams

Mesopotamia and Egypt until 395 BC: ?he theory, techniques, materials and technologies of building and art in the ancient worlds of Mesopotamia and Egypt

Minoan, Mycenaean and ancient Greek architecture and art : ?he theory, techniques and technologies of building and art in the ancient worlds of the Minoans, Mycenaeans and ancient Greeks

Roman Empire: 200 BC-mid fourth century AD: the theory, techniques and technologies of building and art in the ancient Roman world.

Early Christian-Byzantine period: 4th century. AD mid-15th century. AD (1453): ?he theory, techniques and technologies of building and art in the early Christian and Byzantine empire.

Romanesque-Gothic: the theory, techniques and technologies of building and art in the early Romanesque and Gothic period in Europe

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of the course is delivered to students by means of lectures, conducted by electronic presentations. Lecture notes and pictures are given to students in electronic form.

Lectures are supplemented by field trips to antiquities on the island
