Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Define the design principles that guide the language of Architecture.
  2. Identify the significance of the main design principles: proportion, scale, materiality, texture and color in the design process.
  3. Apply the knowledge of the design process and its applications / relation to construction methods and technologies.
  4. Analyze the external factors that affect the design process: environment, local climatic conditions, human activities and comfort.
  5. Create a detailed programmatic brief and propose a small scale site specific building taking into consideration all the above parameters.
  6. Evaluate the outcome of the proposed work, justify the proposed solutions and appraise the significance in translation of the architectural process from invention and expression to application and construction.

Course ContentsThe main objective of this studio course constitutes the composition and planning of a small group of buildings through the design approach of a complex brief. Moreover, issues of integration in an urban cultural environment should also be taken into account and should be approached through the interaction of proposed built and open space with the anthropocentric context. Studio’s intention is to promote students’ awareness and reflection with fundamental architectural issues through the integration of a new building in a culturally charged context and to enable the student to deal with the following issues: Developing means and tools to deal with complex design issues, research, critical thought, and understanding of integration issues in a given built environment, incorporation of structural issues through the integration of new buildings in a cultural environment and load bearing structural issues
