Course Contents | Introduction: The social-historical construction of the terms “modernity” and “tradition”. The decoding of terms as an [introductory] analytic strategy. The historical context/roots: Enlightenment and the French Revolution The cultural dynamics of modernity: Culture: from romanticism to realism – social and aesthetic transformations. The age of the machine : its impact on society, knowledge, politics, everyday life. The blending of rationality and progress. Discussion of architecture, theatre and/or painting. The cultural revolution of modernism: Modernist movements: painting, writing, cinema, theatre. Modernism and politics: social revolution and art in the first half of the 20th century. Discussion of architecture. The shift to post modernity: From the crisis of meaning of the 50’s to the “underground” and the “revolution of everyday life” in the 60’s and 70’s.The politics of difference. The changing conception/definition of art. Decentering the subject, the crisis of master-narratives, and the rise of relativism. Theoretical debates on the post modern: The theoretical debate since the early 1980’s: Jameson, Lyotard, Habermas – Foucault. The implications of the post modernity debates on art and architecture. | ||||||||
