Course ContentsThe lesson extends the discussion of town planning and urban design that had developed in previous courses (such as BACULT 10, 09 and 11) where have covered extensively quotes on town planning, urban design, analysis methodologies, urban planning, etc. It is mainly focused on urban design interventions and their implementation in order to develop competence and skills by giving solutions on environmental problems, based on the Cypriot reality.
The course emphasis on the scale of the Urban Design, with small or large scale interventions that determine the shape of the urban environment and its parts.
The aim of urban design concerns the integration of new functions in a specific region of Nicosia as a part of a wider regeneration of functional and morphological features that make up the existing character and appearance of the area.
These interventions need to date out simultaneously on two levels:
A. at the level of functional, economic and social restructuring of the area where it should meet new, contemporary, needs, infrastructure networks and transportation which must respond to new relationships and
B. at the level of build form and structure of urban fabric (scale, buildings typologies, blocks or other urban fabric devices, open and green spaces, roads, organised and unstructured spaces, private and public spaces, etc.)
