Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Define the main currents of modern art and describe the formalistic and theoretical characteristics of art works and the cultural, ideological, political and artistic environment in which they have been created.
  2. Identify and explain the aesthetical characteristics of different art works in painting, sculpture, and environmental art, as well as outline its importance for the society.
  3. Define the art work of several Cypriot artists and define their influences of the different artistic expressions in modern art.
  4. Analyze and then use information to present historical and theoretical issues based on the history of art of 20th century through a critical and philosophical approach.
  5. Develop the ability to recognise the characteristics of different artistic movements in art and architecture of the 20th century.

Course Contents

       Introduction to Art of 20th Century: The origins of Modern Art.

       The break of the form: Cubism, Expressionism, futurism, surrealism, the Bauhaus.

       Artistic groups and movements of modern art after 1945: Artists and the aesthetic characteristics of their works.

       Art after Abstract Expressionism.

       Retrospective view of modern art in Cyprus.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThe taught part of the course consists of face-to-face lectures of theoretical and interactive context employing electronic presentations of different art works of a variety of artists. Learning activities also include visits to museums and art galleries.
