| | Learning Outcomes of the course unit | By the end of the course, the students should be able to:- Have an understanding of international and regional maritime regulating organisations and the structure, content and application of major conventions.
- Have an understanding of the adoption, ratification, implementation and amendment of international regulatory instruments and explain how countries which are parties to conventions are governed by them.
- Be aware of private international law concepts and recognize that the law of a particular country and not ‘international’ law will govern their relationship and thus determine their dispute.
- Understand basic legal issues that arise in international trade and transport contracts and analyse and discuss how obligations and liabilities arise in international trade relationships.
- Understand the legal principles relating to charter parties and Bills of Lading and compare and contrast the main carriage of goods by sea conventions and their respective differences.
- Understand and apply the fundamental principles and scope of marine insurance cover and.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles and practice of litigation and arbitration in dispute resolution.

| Course Contents |
- International and regional maritime regulating organisations.
- International conventions (preparation, adoption, ratification and accession, amendment and implementation).
- Survey and certification of ships, the role of Flag State and Port State control.
- Contract law and the matrix of contracts in international trade law – sale of goods.

- International trade and transport law conventions and their applications (Hague, Hague-Visby, Hamburg and Rotterdam Rules).
- The concepts of risk and loss, insurability of risk and basic scope of cover in the common types of insurance of maritime property, liabilities and cargo.
- Principles and Practice of Disputes Resolution – litigation, arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
