SUDESCO 2014 - OBJECTIVES
The series of the SUDESCO summer workshops focuses on critical issues relevant to the future of coastal areas in the European Context. Central themes are the assessment of the distinctive character and environmental quality of different sections of the coast, waterfront architecture and heritage and appropriate environmental strategies and design. The SUDESCO 2014 summer workshop will take place in July 2014 in one of the best known Cyprus tourist resorts, that of Ayia Napa. Its coastal area is of a high environmental and cultural value dominated by a mass tourist industry. The extensive tourist development and associated infrastructure, during recent decades, has completely changed the identity of the coast, resulting in various conflicts at the spatial level, but also affecting environmental, social and d economic sustainability.
Key questions are:
How is the term 'sustainability' defined in a fundamentally
'unsustainable' built environment context?
Do planning and design have the tools 'to tailor' the demand driven
by the local authority strategies for 'sustainable mass tourism'?
Can innovative proposals for alternative, less intrusive interventions begin to change
attitudes towards expectations of both 'clients' as well as 'policy makers' of such high
value costal environments? |
