The general aim of the Program is to prepare specialised scientists in the fields of Pharmaceutical Science such as pharmacology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacognosy amongst others. The conducted research within the Program is in alignment with the mission and vision of both the Department and the University.

Additionally, the aim of the Program is to develop scientists who always follow the latest technological and scientific developments and adopt the philosophy of critical thinking with an evidence-based, multidisciplinary, collaborative thinking structure, contributing to the scientific and social community in general.

The goals of the Program are to:

- Provide a framework for conducting original and innovative state-of-the-art research, leading to the creation of new useful knowledge, that will be beneficial to the science, the economy and the society
- Develop highly educated graduates, equipped with the knowledge, skills, ethos and capabilities that will enable them to seek a successful career as researchers or as leading officials in a relevant industry or health sector
- Contribute to the increase of the research output, the number of publications and the funded research of the Department.

PhD studies aim at the development of high-quality scientific research and the training of scientists capable of contributing to the advancement of science, research and applications in education. The successful completion of the doctoral studies pre-supposes the ability of autonomous scientific work in the research of the respective scientific field and certifies the scientific specialisation of the graduates in the specific subject.

With the completion of the Program, students are expected to be able to:

- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and independently formulate ideas and hypotheses that will extend the forefront of knowledge and discover new knowledge through original research in the field of Pharmacy.
- Employ relevant techniques and practices, as well as to use appropriate tools necessary in conducting their research work.
- Design, develop and implement methodologies and settings that will enable the validation and evaluation of the outcome of their research work, and formulate reasoned judgments and propose solutions.
- Conduct primary research activity, present and successfully defend the outcomes of their research and produce work of publishable quality.
- Evaluate critically and review research work related to the domain of their research.
- Demonstrate awareness of any ethical and legal implications of their research and engage with the ethical and legal context of their research.
- Develop personal and professional soft skills, such as communication and presentation skills, team-working, leadership, and time management, necessary for a successful career.
Graduates of the Program may be employed at senior positions in Universities, Research Centres, health organisations, Drug Research and Development departments, Pharmaceutical Industry, Pharmaceutical Services, etc.

Statistical data from most of the EU countries show that PhD holders present almost zero unemployment rate.

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates can be admitted to the Program only if they satisfy the general admission requirements of the University.

Eligible applicants must hold a University MSc degree of relevant specialisation, granted by a recognised institution. Additionally, each application should indicatively include certified copies of all degrees and transcripts, Curriculum Vitae, research statement, two letters of recommendation, proof of English language proficiency. During the evaluation process, personal interview of the applicant will take place by the Doctoral Programme Committee.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Candidates can be granted transfer credits according to the general arrangements for recognition of prior learning of the University.

The examination regulations, assessment methods and grading system for this program are the same as the relevant general University regulations.

Students must successfully complete 180 ECTS of doctoral level coursework, courses, research work, and seminar attendance.

The minimum normal duration of the Program is three years.
