New grading system

Your guide to how
the new grading system
works

Starting from academic year 2023-24 (October 2023), Frederick University is implementing a new grading system. Below are important questions and answers to help you understand how the new system will be applied:

How does this affect me?

The new system is applied as follows, depending on whether you belong to Category A or Category B:

Category A: New coming Students (2023-2024)

For students that commenced their studies in the Fall Semester of 2023 (October 2023) and thereafter, the new grading system will be fully applied as outlined below.

Category B: Students who started their studies in the Spring semester of 2023 (February 2023) and earlier:

• The previous grading system will continue to apply for semester grade calculation (GPA) and overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA).
• The previous grading system will continue to apply for scholarship calculations.
• The only change for students in this category is in how the overall course grade (midterm and final assessment) is presented. It will now be displayed numerically (e.g., 8.3) instead of using letter grades (e.g., A, B).

Important note: This transitional provision of parallel implementation of both the new and the previous grading systems will be in effect until September 30, 2028, when all students in Category B are expected to graduate. After this date, all students in Category B will be transferred to the new system.

How will I view my grades on the extranet platform?

All students will have access to the results of the Fall Semester 2023 immediately after the examination period through the Extranet platform (exams results).

For all students of the University, the final course grade (combined midterm and final assessment) will now be displayed numerically with one decimal point (e.g., 8.3) and not alphabetically (e.g., A, B). For example, under the previous grading system, if the overall course grade was 93%, it would be represented with the letter 'A.' While now, with the new system, it will be displayed numerically as 9.3.

Note: The transition to the new grading system on the Extranet platform will be fully implemented progressively. Therefore, some features or options in the electronic platforms may temporarily not appear or may not be fully visible. Specifically:

- Transcripts will be available on the Extranet platform from Monday, February 19th.
- The overall CGPA displayed on the study path is calculated based on the old grading system. Therefore, it applies only to students who started their studies up until and including Spring Semester 2023 (February 2023).

Depending on the Category to which you belong, see below your questions answered regarding the new grading system.

If I want to see my grade for a course based on the previous grading system, how can I do that?

If you want to view the grades of your courses based on the previous grading system, you can find the table with the grading scales and the corresponding course grade equivalents in letters (e.g., A, B, C, D, E, F) in our Handbook with useful information, page 10, which is available here.

Has anything changed regarding the passing course grade and the B examination period?

Nothing has changed. To pass a course, you will need to achieve a total grade of 50% or higher. The only change is that the presentation of the course grade will no longer include the 'F' grade. If the overall course grade ranges from 0 to 4.9, it means you have failed the course. The prerequisites and the process of selecting courses for the B examination period remain the same.

As a student of Category B, will anything change regarding the scholarship system?

No! As mentioned above, both the calculation of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and the determination of scholarships for students who commenced their studies with the previous grading system will continue to be calculated based on the previous grading system.

I am a student who will graduate with the previous system. What will be stated on my degree and in my final transcript?
For students in Category B (all students who started their studies in the Spring Semester of 2023) and will graduate within the specified period (until September 2028), the final degree grade, as well as the transcript, will be calculated and displayed based on the previous grading system applied at the start of their studies, which can be found here (page 15).

What is the new grading system?

The following information concern students who began their studies during the academic year 2023-2024 and later (Category A).

1. The grading system is numerical and ranges from 0 to 10, to one decimal point, with increments of 0.1 (i.e. 7.8, 7.9, 8.0, 8.1 etc.).
2. A course grade below 5.0 is considered as F (Fail) and the student must repeat the course. Repeating the course means registering and completing all course requirements. In such a case, the student will pay the fees that correspond to the particular course’s ECTS. An exception to this is if the course meets the criteria for the Second Examination (see below relative question regarding Second Examination).
3. The student's performance for one semester is called Grade Point Average (GPA), while the overall grade point average across multiple semesters (and/or at any point in their studies) is referred to as the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

How is the GPA and CGPA calculated?

The calculation of GPA and CGPA for a student is displayed in the example below, using the results from the Fall Semester 2023 (Table 1) and the Spring Semester 2024 (Table 2).

Table 1: Courses and Grades - Fall Semester 2023

CourseGrade (100%)GPA pointsCourse ECTSSum of GPA points (Course GPA points* Course ECTS)
ΑABC 101 86 8.6 6 (8.6*6) 51.6
ΑDEF 102 79 7.9 5 (7.9*5) 39.5
ΑGHI 103 93 9.3 5 (9.3*5) 46.5
ΑJKL 104 68 6.8 5 (6.8*5) 34
AMNO 105  72 7.2 5 (7.2*5) 36
APQR 106 91 9.1 4 (9.1*4) 36.4
Total     30 244

Calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Fall Semester 2023:

The grade for each course is multiplied by the number of credits (ECTS) of the course, and the sum of all courses GPA points in the semester is divided by the total number of credits (ECTS) that the student accumulated during the semester.

In the example above, the sum of the GPA points (last column) is 244, and the total credits (ECTS) that the student accumulated during the semester is 30. Therefore: 244/30 = 8.13 GPA / CGPA.

Table 2: Spring Semester Courses and Grades

CourseGrade (100%)GPA pointsCourse ECTSSum of GPA points (Course GPA points* Course ECTS)
ΑABC 121 93 9.3 6 (9.3*6) 55.8
ΑDEF 122 100 10 5 (10*5) 50
ΑGHI 123 69 6.9 5 (6.9*5) 34.5
ΑJKL 124 78 7.8 5 (7.8*5) 39
AMNO 125 45 4.5* 4 (4.5*4) 18
APQR 126 84 8.4 5

(8.4*5) 42

Total     30 239.3

*A course grade below 5.0 is considered as F (Fail) and the student must repeat the course. Repeating the course means registering and completing all course requirements. In such a case, the student will pay the fees that correspond to the particular course’s ECTS.

Calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Spring Semester 2024:

Total Sum of GPA points /Total Sum of Semester ECTS =239.3 /30 = 7.97 GPA

Calculation of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

It is the average grade that considers the sum of the products of multiplying the grade of each course by the number of its credit units (ECTS), which the student attended in all semesters of study, divided by the sum of the credits (ECTS) enrolled the student registered so far.

In the example above, the student attended a total of 60 credits (ECTS) (Fall '23 and Spring '24). Additionally, the sum of the products of multiplying each course's grade by its credits (ECTS) (last column in both tables) is 483.3 (244+239.3). Therefore: (244+239.3) / (30+30) = 483.3 / 60 = 8.05 CGPA.

How is my overall degree grade, with which I will graduate, calculated?

Your overall degree grade with the new grading system is recorded on the degree numerically (following the same format with the previous grading system) with two decimal points, according to the following classification:

Excellent with Distinction: 9.50 – 10.00
Excellent: 8.50 – 9.49
Very Good: 6.55 – 8.49
Good: 5.00 – 6.54

How is scholarship calculated based on Academic Performance?

The new academic scholarship scheme will be implemented only for the students who will commence their studies during the Fall 2023 Semester as follows:

Undergraduate Students (conventional studies)

CGPA GradeScholarship Merit (for the Semester) %
9.25 - 10.00 50%
9.00 - 9.24 25%
8.75 - 8.99 10%
7.75 - 8.74 5%

Eligible students

- All full-time undergraduate students, who have completed at least 20 ECTS at the University and registered during the previous semester.
- All part-time undergraduate students, who have completed at least 20 ECTS at the University and were registered during the previous semester to at least 10 ECTS. In the event that students register for more ECTS during the semester they are awarded the scholarship, they are entitled to a scholarship that corresponds to the number of ECTS registered for the previous semester.

Postgraduate Students (conventional studies at Master Level)

Grade CGPAScholarship Merit (for the semester) %
9.25 - 10.00 25%
9.00 - 9.24 10%

Eligible Students

- All postgraduate students at the Master Level (conventional studies) who have completed at least 15 ECTS at the University and were registered for the previous semester. If students are registered for more ECTS during the semester they are awarded the scholarship, they are entitled to a scholarship that corresponds to the number of ECTS they registered for the previous semester.
It is noted that, reductions on tuitions fees which are based on students’ performance, for both undergraduate and postgraduate master level students, are not made in cash, but deducted from the tuition fees of the following semester. Therefore, students having completed their studies cannot expect reductions in their last semester tuition fees. Students who complete their undergraduate studies and continue their studies at a postgraduate level of University are exempted. The postgraduate Master scheme applies from the first semester of study.

What is the Second Examination Period?

1. Students have she opportunity to repeat examinations, in courses failed during the Fall and Spring Semesters, within the framework of the Second Examination Period.
2. Exams take place during the first two weeks of September.
3. Students can register for second examination only if they achieve a continuous assessment grade (coursework) above 40/100 or an overall grade of 40-49%.
4. The second examination for practical courses in Architecture and Fine and Applied Arts take place, as for other students, during the second examination period (September) and only if the terms mentioned in point 3 applies.
5. The final grade for the course during the second examination period is defined by the coursework and the result of the repeat examination, with the weighting that was applied at the beginning of the relevant semester.
6. The total amount of credits for courses of second examinations cannot exceed 30% of ECTS allocated to the student during the year. The limit may increase by 2 ECTS for rounding purposes, if necessary.
7. A student who fails a course is not eligible to register for a course whose prerequisite is that of the failed subject.
8. For courses which students are eligible to choose and take the examinations of the second examination period, announcements are made by the Studies and Student Welfare Service.
9. The courses of the second examinations count towards the student’s overall load for the summer semester by 1/3 (that is if students register for second examination with total 9 ECTS, they will be considered as having registered for 3 ECTS for the summer semester). It must be noted that 15 ECTS is the maximum load for the summer semester.
10. In order to qualify for sitting an exam of the second examination period, students must register for the courses they are eligible for. These courses must be selected during August.
11. There is a fee of 80 euros for each course that the student registers to sit as a second examination.
12. In case of course failure during the second examination, the student will need to re-register to the course when it is offered fulfilling all course requirements.
