Short CV
Dr. Yiannis Parpottas is an Associate Professor in Physics at Frederick University. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from Ohio University, and his Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Experimental Physics from Ohio University in USA. He was employed at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, of the Physics Department, of Duke University, in USA. He also worked at the Physics Department, of the University of Cyprus, for the HADES Collaboration, at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany. At Frederick University, he is teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, in the School of Engineering, and in particular, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is also teaching physics in the undergraduate programs of the School of Health Sciences for the Departments of Pharmacy and Nursing. He conducts research in basic and applied nuclear physics. In particular, his research interest in basic nuclear physics lies in the area of heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies studying the equation of state at hot and dense nuclear matter via high-resolution di-electron spectroscopy. His main research interests in applied nuclear physics lie in the areas of (a) engineering and nuclear medicine imaging, and (b) environmental radioactivity. Together with his group / laboratory ‘Bioengineering and Nuclear Medicine Imaging’ at Frederick University, his collaborating Nuclear Medicine Departments, in Cyprus and abroad, and his external partner organizations, he optimizes diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures to detect early metabolic changes. He participated in sixteen projects funded by the US National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the European Frameworks. He also coordinated projects funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and the European Regional Development Fund. He is the author/co-author of more than 130 publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings. He is also a Board Member of the Cyprus Association of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (CAMPBE), a Board Member of the Cyprus Nuclear Medicine Society, a member of the American Physical Society, and a member of the World Association of Radiopharmaceutical and Molecular Therapy. He is affiliated with the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA), the European Federation of Organizations of Medical Physics (EFOMP), and the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES), through CAMPBE. In addition, he is in the Board of Directors of the Natural Gas Public Company of Cyprus, and in the National Committee for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety.
