Start-ups

Universities play a crucial role in fostering innovation and supporting start-ups that contribute to a smart, green economy.

By providing resources and a supportive environment to start-ups, we strive to drive technological advancements and promote sustainable practices.

Open Laboratories

Frederick University’s laboratories are made available to start-ups for experimentation. They can access our equipment and infrastructure in order to create new knowledge or support their learning needs. For further information please contact the University’s Research and Interconnection Service at research@frederick.ac.cy.

Supporting start-ups

Frederick University actively supports the development and growth of start-ups by facilitating access to external funding, providing academic expertise and mentoring, and helping commercialise research and innovation. Over the past two years, the University has supported dozens of start-ups working in areas including technology, artificial intelligence, low-carbon innovation, energy and renewables, food waste management and medical imaging. Academic staff contribute as consultants, mentors and research associates, while start-ups can also access University laboratories to support experimentation and development.

Several spin-offs and start-ups have been established to commercialise intellectual property originating from Frederick University, advancing innovation across engineering, healthcare, energy and sustainability.

These include:

- HyStore Tech, which focuses on hydrogen production, purification and storage, as well as hydrogen applications such as green electricity generation using hydrogen and fuel cells. Its activities support the development of hydrogen-based energy technologies.

- Euphyia Tech, which offers the Smart Readiness Audit, an innovative service for European organisations. Through assessments of building assets and operational performance, the company supports sustainability improvements and contributes to efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

- Kyamos, which develops software for designing and optimising engineering systems and facilities, helping improve the efficiency of engineering processes.

- RF and Microwave Solutions, which provides modelling, simulation, measurement, characterisation and design services for radio-frequency components, circuits and antennas.

- Cloud Water, an R&D start-up specialising in low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers and research in positioning, geodesy, meteorology and atmospheric remote sensing.

- AInfinite, which develops specialised software solutions, including DineTours, a virtual-tour and online-booking platform.

- MammoCheck, a Frederick University spin-off that has developed a device enabling women to perform painless at-home examinations for the early detection of breast cancer using thermography and artificial intelligence. The company has received support from Cyprus Seeds, which helps commercialise innovative academic research. It has also received recognition in several entrepreneurship competitions, including first-place awards at the NBG Business Seeds Innovation Competition, the Cyprus Entrepreneurship Competition and Startups4Peace 2023, as well as second place in the AmCham EU Youth Entrepreneurship Award 2023. MammoCheck has also joined Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub.

Through these initiatives, Frederick University helps translate academic research and technological expertise into practical solutions with commercial and societal value. In particular, start-ups such as HyStore Tech and Euphyia Tech demonstrate the University’s contribution to low-carbon innovation through hydrogen-based energy technologies and building sustainability services. By supporting entrepreneurs with expertise, research infrastructure and funding opportunities, the University fosters innovation and helps advance technologies and services that can contribute to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.

Participation in the Innovation Vouchers Programme

Frederick University participates in the Innovation Vouchers Programme of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), which supports the growth and competitiveness of start-ups, innovative companies, and SMEs through advisory services provided by research organizations like Frederick University. The Programme encourages Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to engage in research and innovation activities, promoting collaboration between businesses and knowledge-intensive organizations. Beneficiaries receive “Innovation Vouchers,” which they redeem for specialized research and innovation services offered by participating organizations. Through this initiative, Frederick University has supported innovative start-ups driving technological progress and sustainability.

Innovation Competitions

The University actively encourages student participation in industry-sponsored competitions aimed at empowering the younger generation to contribute positively to the local society and economy.

Some examples are: Portathon (innovation, sustainability, AI, cybersecurity, maritime technologies or the future of port cities), BOC Fintech Hackathon (Social Innovation, Cybersecurity and Smart Cities), Zubr Capital Young Hackathon (entrepreneurship, technology, innovation), EU-CONEXUS Innovation Contest of Ideas (Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability), and Youth Connect - Media Literacy in the Age of AI (media and AI literacy).

Another example is the EU-CONEXUS ENABLES Hackathon, held at the Limassol campus on 21-22 October 2026. Under the theme “Decarbonising Port Operations through Smart Energy and Digital Twin Solutions”, the two-day hackathon invited participants to collaborate, innovate and shape smart solutions for the ports of the future.

Supporting green innovation

Frederick University participates in INVESTech, a project that aims to strengthen vocational education and training in the ICT sector through innovation, digital skills development and collaboration between education providers, businesses and public authorities across five European regions. By promoting advanced technologies, entrepreneurship and the integration of sustainability into vocational education, the project contributes to green innovation and the development of digital solutions that address environmental challenges. Through initiatives such as innovation labs, specialised training and entrepreneurial activities, INVESTech encourages learners and professionals to develop innovative approaches that support the green transition and a more sustainable economy. The project’s planned activities include 10 Hackathons focused on sustainability and social inclusion. During these Hackathons, through collaborative, hands-on activities, students work in teams to develop and present innovative digital prototypes, strengthening their technical, problem-solving, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills while connecting with industry experts and potential partners. The Hackathons help participants explore how technology can address sustainability challenges, such as improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impacts. For example, the 2026 INVESTech Hackathon in Cyprus included a team solution focused on energy efficiency in the home, demonstrating how digital innovation can contribute to more sustainable living.
