Ms. Effie Nicolaou is an Architect Engineer based in Limassol. Since 2009 she practices architecture in Cyprus and in Greece. She is the founder of MEKANIC Architects, founded in 2013 in Limassol (, specialized mostly in residential buildings and commercial buildings. She has worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Architecture of UTH and at the Postgraduate Program “Urban Regeneration and Development” of the Department of Planning and Regional Development, UTH during the years 2014-2016. She graduated from the Department of Architecture of University of Thessaly (2013) with Distinction and she holds a Master Diploma in Architectural and Urban Design also from UTH (2016). For her postgraduate studies she has received a scholarship from the State Scholarship Foundation of Cyprus (2015). Since 2017 she is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Architecture, UTH and her research focuses on the post-industrial landscapes in the Mediterranean region and the transformations of the urban landscape due to urban interventions. In general, her main academic interests and research emphasizes to urban planning and urban interventions as it’s presented in her Diploma Thesis entitled “Costal walk: Urban intervention to Volos waterfront” and her postgraduate Diploma Thesis that focuses on Nicosia’s Dead Zone, entitled “Chartography of the boundaries along the Dead Zone in Nicosia, Potential scenarios for the future”. She has participated in various conferences, seminars and exhibitions regarding both architecture and art such as InHeriT: Promoting Cultural Heritage as a Generator of Sustainable Development, Chania, Greece (2018), the 25th International Architectural Conference held by the International Union of Architects (UIA) "Architecture otherwhere", Durban, South Africa (2014) and the 1st Regional Conference CyNum held in Ledra Palace, Nicosia (2018). Beyond her architectural practice Effie is also a musician with expertise in Classical Guitar where she teaches since 2009 in private conservatories, while she participates in various major concerts both in Greece and in Cyprus.
