Connecting education, research and industry

Strong industry engagement is at the heart of the Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce. Through strategic partnerships with leading organisations, public authorities, shipping companies and industry associations, the Department ensures that its teaching, research and outreach activities remain closely aligned with the evolving needs of the maritime, transport and blue economy sectors.

These collaborations provide students with valuable exposure to industry practices and emerging trends, while enabling the Department to contribute to policy development, sustainable innovation and applied research with real-world impact. The Department works closely with key stakeholders in Cyprus and internationally to address contemporary challenges in maritime transport, ports, logistics, trade and environmental sustainability.

The Department's Maritime Advisory Board brings together distinguished executives and decision-makers from the shipping, transport, logistics and wider blue economy sectors.

The Board provides strategic guidance on the Department's teaching, research and outreach activities, ensuring that academic programmes remain aligned with industry developments, technological innovation and evolving workforce needs. Through regular consultation, members contribute to curriculum development, research priorities and graduate skills, helping prepare students for successful careers in an increasingly dynamic global maritime sector.

The Advisory Board also strengthens the Department's engagement with industry by fostering dialogue, encouraging collaborative research and supporting knowledge exchange between academia and maritime professionals. This close partnership ensures that the Department continues to deliver relevant education while contributing to the sustainable growth and competitiveness of the maritime industry.

To support its work, the Advisory Board operates through two dedicated Subcommittees: the Academic Programs Subcommittee and the Research Subcommittee.

Two full scholarships for Maritime Studies offered by DP World

DP World offers one full scholarship (4 years – 240 ECTS) for the BSc in Maritime Studies and one full scholarship (3 semesters – 90 ECTS) for one of the postgraduate programs of study offered by Frederick University’s Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce.

The scholarships will be awarded based on socioeconomical criteria, as well as the academic performance of candidates and their personality.

Candidates are advised to go through the terms and conditions of the scholarships, and ensure they meet the criteria before the completion and submission of the application.

ScholarshipS

For the academic year 2026-2027 the following scholarships will be awarded:

One (1) full scholarship to a new incoming undergraduate student in Frederick University’s BSc in Maritime Studies. The scholarship will cover the tuition fees for the first academic year (first two semesters) and can be renewed per semester thereafter based on the academic performance of the students at Frederick University. To retain the scholarship, the student must maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 7.00 / 10.00 or above.
One (1) full scholarship to a new incoming postgraduate student in one of the postgraduate programs of study offered by Frederick University’s Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce (MSc in International Trade and Shipping Management, LLM in Maritime Law and Shipping Business, MSc in Marine Engineering and Management). The scholarship will cover the tuition fees of the entire program of study (3 semesters – 90 ECTS).

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The scholarship will be awarded on the condition that the selected candidate meets the admission criteria of the program they apply to.
Eligible applicants are individuals who are:

coming from families with a per capita family income (average income per family member) of up to 22,000 euros. In calculating the per capita income, the parents and dependent children of the family are taken into account. (Dependent children are defined as children under the age of 18; secondary education students under the age of 20; soldiers serving in the National Guard under the age of 21; university students under the age of 24; and children who are permanently incapable of self-support, regardless of age).
hold Cypriot citizenship and/or are citizens of a member state of the European Union, provided that for a period of three years, prior to the start of their studies, they have resided in Cyprus for a continuous period of at least thirty (30) months and continue to reside in Cyprus during the period of submission of their application, or are not Cypriot citizens or citizens of member state of the European Union, provided that they reside permanently in Cyprus and have graduated from a Secondary School in Cyprus.

Only individuals who are registered or will be registered as new, first-year students in academic year 2026/27 are eligible to apply. Transfer students are not eligible to apply.
Scholarships are not retroactive, nor can they be combined with any other scholarship or discount offered by Frederick University.

Application submission

Interested candidates are required to complete the scholarship application form.
The completed applications with the required documentation should be submitted electronically at adminfo@frederick.ac.cy by Monday, 28^th of August 2026.

EVALUATION, SELECTION PROCEDURE, AND RESULTS

All duly completed applications that are submitted within the set timeframe and are accompanied by the required documentation, will be evaluated by a Scholarship Evaluation Committee, appointed by Frederick University and DP World.

Applications will be ranked according to a scoring system that is based on socio-economic criteria and the academic performance of the candidates in secondary education. Candidates may be invited to an interview with the Committee.

At the Department of Maritime, Transport and Commerce, learning extends beyond the classroom. Through internships, field visits and industry engagement, students gain first-hand experience of the maritime sector, applying their knowledge in real-world settings while developing the practical skills, professional networks and industry insight that prepare them for successful careers.

1st Educational Field Trip – London, 2019
In 2019, students from the Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce at Frederick University participated in an educational field trip to London, one of the world’s leading maritime and financial centres. The programme included visits to Drewry, Clarksons, Lloyd’s, the Baltic Exchange, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the Shipowners’ P&I Club, offering students first-hand insight into shipping research, shipbroking, marine insurance, freight markets, international maritime regulation, and protection and indemnity cover. Visits to Cass Business School and the Royal Observatory Greenwich further enriched the experience by connecting maritime business education with the United Kingdom’s long-standing contribution to navigation and maritime history.

2nd Educational Field Trip – Brussels, Antwerp, Rotterdam and The Hague, 2023
In 2023, students participated in a multidisciplinary educational field trip to Brussels, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and The Hague. Visits to the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Community Shipowners’ Associations provided valuable insights into European policymaking, maritime regulation, sustainability, and the representation of the shipping industry at EU level. At the Ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, students observed the operation of two of Europe’s largest port and logistics hubs and learned about port management, digitalisation, the energy transition, and integrated supply chains. The programme also included a visit to the ADR Shipyard in Antwerp, where students gained first-hand knowledge of shipyard operations, ship repair and maintenance activities, technical services, and the practical requirements of vessel management. Finally, the visit to the International Court of Justice in The Hague introduced students to the institutional framework of international law and dispute settlement.

3rd Educational Field Trip – London, 2024
In 2024, the Department organised a second educational field trip to London, with an expanded programme reflecting the diverse professional ecosystem of international shipping. Students visited INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, Lloyd’s, the Baltic Exchange, Clarksons, the IMO, the Shipowners’ P&I Club, Amphitrite Underwriters, Standard Chartered Bank, and Bayes Business School. These visits provided practical exposure to tanker and dry-bulk shipping, shipbroking, freight markets, maritime regulation, marine insurance and underwriting, shipping finance, risk management, and maritime higher education. A further visit to the Royal Observatory Greenwich placed these contemporary subjects within the broader historical development of navigation, maritime timekeeping, and global seaborne trade.
