Books on urban planning and architecture to be presented in Athens
Two books on urban planning and the architecture of the city, to which Professor Byron Ioannou, Head of the Department of Architecture, has contributed, will be presented at the Cyprus Cultural Centre The House of Cyprus, in Athens.
The book presentation will be held on Thursday, 19 February 2026, at 18:00.
As knowledge about urban space and its transformations is produced at an ever-growing pace and volume, urban planning practice must remain informed, responsive, and focused on what truly matters. In this context, the comparative examination of diverse experiences and perspectives becomes increasingly valuable.
The book (in greek) titled "Urban Planning and the Architecture of the City: Lessons from Experience" (Epikentro Publications) brings together 15 academics and researchers from universities in Cyprus and Greece with extensive experience in urban planning and the architecture of the city. The aim is to shed light on critical aspects of urban and rural development and planning. The book is structured into three sections, beginning with planning theory, representational tools, historical and sensitive environments, and public space. Urban mobility forms a substantial second section, with references to good practices from European cities, the importance of public transport–based urban development, and patterns of road networks. Finally, the third section focuses on specialized issues from Greece and Cyprus, such as waterfronts, landscape assessment, the institutional framework of planning, and challenges arising from climate risks.
In addition to Prof. Ioannou, contributions to the volume include texts by Dr Grigoris Kalnis and Professor Lora Nicolaou, members of the academic staff of the Department of Architecture at Frederick University.
