Educating youth on clean energy and energy efficiency

As part of its commitment to raising awareness about energy efficiency and clean energy within the local community, Frederick University has incorporated a dedicated section on renewable energy into its annual Summer School program for local pupils.

During this year’s Summer School, held from 3 to 7 June 2024, pupils participated in a range of educational activities focused on clean energy and energy efficiency, during which they learned about various renewable energy sources and observed the use of photovoltaics in electricity production. They also took part in an interactive, hands-on workshop, where they were instructed by academic staff from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering & Informatics and carried out calculations based on real-world conditions. They also discussed energy-saving strategies, smart energy management, and reducing energy consumption.

The program further included a visit to the Ayia Anna Wind Farm, where pupils had the opportunity to observe wind turbine operations and the production of wind energy. Additionally, they toured Mech, a state-of-the-art factory specialising in Hydrogen Technologies, gaining insights into renewable energy solutions that support sustainable development. Throughout the visits, pupils were accompanied by academic staff from both the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering & Informatics.

Frederick University’s Summer School takes place annually in June and is attended by more than 80 pupils from Technical Schools across Cyprus. During the program, participants spend a week at the University’s campuses in Nicosia and Limassol, experiencing campus life, exploring various fields of study, and strengthening the University’s connection with the local community through education and engagement in sustainability-focused initiatives.
