Opening remarks by Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis at the BLF 2026
"For a sixth consecutive year, the Blue Limassol Forum aims to address key issues and initiatives related to the Blue Economy and Coastal Sustainability, leveraging Limassol's unique position as a leading commercial and shipping centre, as well as a major coastal city in the Mediterranean.
Our city, shaped by the sea for centuries, stands today as a living example of the opportunities and responsibilities that come with a coastal identity. The Mediterranean is our horizon but also our heritage, our economy, and our shared future.
This year’s theme, “From Commitment to Integrated Coastal Governance in Practice,” is both timely and essential. Across the world, we have witnessed strong commitments, ambitious declarations, strategic frameworks, and policy pledges aimed at protecting our coastal and marine environments.
Yet, the true challenge lies not in making commitments, but in implementing them effectively, inclusively, and sustainably.
In Limassol, we understand that integrated coastal governance must be a daily practice. It requires coordination across sectors, collaboration between institutions, and meaningful engagement with local communities. It demands that we balance economic growth with environmental protection, urban development with ecosystem preservation, and innovation with resilience.
Our coastline is part of the city’s DNA: a dynamic space, supporting tourism, shipping, fisheries, culture, and recreation. However, it is also increasingly threatened by climate change, rising sea levels, coastal erosion reminding us that action cannot be delayed. The decisions we make today will define the coastlines of tomorrow.
This Forum provides us with a valuable platform to move forward together. It brings policymakers, scientists, practitioners, and stakeholders into one space, fostering the exchange of experiences and encouraging dialogue that bridges knowledge and action. Here, we have the opportunity to exchange ideas and shape practical solutions that can be applied in real-world contexts.
As a city, Limassol is committed to advancing integrated approaches. We are investing in sustainable urban planning, promoting blue and green infrastructure, and supporting initiatives that enhance coastal resilience. However, we also recognize that no city can act alone. Cooperation at the local, regional, and international levels is key to success.
Our vision for Limassol is guided by clear, long-term objectives aimed at creating a positive social impact, improving quality of life, and strengthening community wellbeing for every resident.
Over the past months, we have listened carefully to the voices of our citizens in order to shape policies that reflect the real needs and aspirations of our community. This dialogue has reinforced our commitment to transforming Limassol into a truly “City for All” — a city that places people at the centre of every policy and decision.
We are determined to build a more accessible, affordable, inclusive, and people-friendly urban environment, where every resident can participate fully in civic life and benefit from sustainable growth.
At the same time, we are advancing policies that will reshape the city’s public spaces and mobility network for the benefit of current and future generations. We are expanding open public spaces, pedestrian areas, and safe cycling routes in order to create a cleaner, healthier, and more connected city, with lower congestion and reduced emissions.
Let this Forum be a place where commitments are translated into concrete actions. Let it inspire partnerships that will endure beyond these days, and solutions that will extend beyond our borders.
I encourage you to engage actively, share your expertise, and challenge conventional thinking. Together, we can turn vision into practice and ensure that our coastal regions remain vibrant, resilient, and sustainable for future generations."
