Prof. Georgios Karikas

George Albert Karikas is Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Sciences at the University of West Attica (UWA), Athens. He teaches Pharmacognosy at the undergraduate Department of Pharmacy and is a coordinator-professor at the Postgraduate Program of the same dept. titled “Advanced Cosmetology and Natural Health Products” at Frederick University, Cyprus. He studied Pharmacy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). In 1981 he completed his PhD thesis at the Biological Chemistry and Biochemistry laboratories of the Therapeutic Clinic of the Medical School of NKUA, on the effects of cannabis smoke and its components on brain ATPase. With a scholarship from the Hellenic Republic, he completed a second doctorate (Ph.D.) in Natural Products Chemistry in 1986, at the Pharmacy Dept., Manchester University, United Kingdom, where he taught as a tutor in the two years 1985-86. In 1987-8 he worked as a Quality Control Manager in a Greek Pharmaceutical/Cosmetics Industry. From 1988-2017, with the rank of Director of the National Health System, he worked in the Parenteral Nutrition and Pharmacokinetics Unit of the ‘Aghia Sophia’ Children’s Hospital. During the same period, he worked as a researcher-visiting professor at the Universities of Panama, Salamanca (Spain), Orebro (Sweden) and NKUA. In 2007, he was elected full professor of Biochemistry-Clinical Chemistry at the UWA. He is the founder, coordinator and professor of the over 10-year postgraduate program “Biomedical Methods and Technology in Diagnosis” at the UWA, while he has supervised 70 diploma and postgraduate theses at domestic and foreign universities. His research interests focus on issues of Clinical Biochemistry, Pharmacognosy and Drug Analysis. He has participated in funded research programs and published more than 120 original papers/reviews in peer-reviewed journals, with a significant number of references, and has authored 10 university books/notes. At the same time, he participated as an invited speaker, with more than 200 appearances, in national and international conferences. He is a reviewer in 30 scientific journals abroad, while he has been a member of hospital and regional committees of the Greek Ministry of Health (PESY, EOF) and Education (DOATAP, IKY). For the last 30 years, he has been editor-in-chief of the journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences “Pharmakeftiki” (Scopus). He has also received awards and distinctions. Among them, and since 1997, he has been a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His biographical data is included, since 2000, in Millennium Edition 2000 Who’s Who in the World, while in 2006 he was included in the international list of Leading Scientists in the World. In 2023 he served as Guest Editor in the journal Molecules and lately as Honorary Chairman/speaker at the 18th Annual World Cancer Congress (2026). In 2021, he received an Honorary Distinction from the Rector's Council of the University of West Attica (UWA) for his overall academic and educational work.

Ο  Γεώργιος Αλβέρτος Καρίκας, είναι Oμότιμος καθηγητής Βιοιατρικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Αττικής (ΠαΔΑ), Αθήνα. Διδάσκει Φαρμακογνωσία στο προπτυχιακό Τμήμα Φαρμακευτικής και είναι συντονιστής-καθηγητής στο Μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα του ίδιου τμήματος ¨Προηγμένη Κοσμητολογία και Φυσικά Προιόντα Υγείας του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick, Κύπρου. Σπούδασε Φαρμακευτική στο Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΕΚΠΑ). Το 1981 εκπόνησε διδακτορική διατριβή στα εργαστήρια Βιολογικής Χημείας και Βιοχημείας της Θεραπευτικής κλινικής της Ιατρικής Σχολής του ΕΚΠΑ, με αντικείμενο την Επίδραση του καπνού της κάνναβης και των συστατικών της στην ATPάση του εγκεφάλου. Με υποτροφία του ΙΚΥ ολοκλήρωσε το 1986 ένα δεύτερο διδακτορικό (Ph.D.) στη Χημεία Φυσικών Προιόντων, στο Pharmacy Dept., Manchester University, United Kingdom, όπου και δίδαξε ως tutor στη διετία 1985-86. Το 1987-8 εργάσθηκε ως Υπεύθυνος Ποιοτικού ελέγχου σε ελληνική Βιομηχανία Φαρμάκων/Καλλυντικών. Από το  1988-2017 εργάσθηκε   με το βαθμό Δ/ντή του ΕΣΥ, στη Μονάδα Παρεντερικής Διατροφής και Φαρμακοκινητικής του Νοσοκομείου Παίδων ‘Αγία Σοφία’. Στο ίδιο διάστημα έγινε δεκτός ως ερευνητής-επισκέπτης καθηγητής στα Πανεπιστήμια Panama, Salamanca (Spain), Orebro (Sweden), ΕΚΠΑ, Το 2007 εκλέχτηκε τακτικός καθηγητής Βιοχημείας-Κλινικής Χημείας στο ΠαΔΑ. Είναι ιδρυτής, συντονιστής και καθηγητής του υπερ-10ετούς Μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος «Βιοιατρικές Μέθοδοι και Τεχνολογία στη Διάγνωση» στο ΠαΔΑ, ενώ έχει καθοδηγήσει 70 διπλωματικές και μεταπτυχιακές εργασίες σε ΑΕΙ εσωτερικού και εξωτερικού. Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται σε θέματα Κλινικής Βιοχημείας, Φαρμακογνωσίας και Ανάλυσης φαρμάκων. Εχει συμμετάσχει σε επιχορηγούμενα ερευνητικά προγράμματα και δημοσιεύσει περισσότερες από 120 πρωτότυπες εργασίες/ανασκοπήσεις σε περιοδικά με κριτές, με σημαντικό αριθμό αναφορών, και έχει συγγράψει 10 πανεπιστημιακά βιβλία/σημειώσεις. Παράλληλα συμμετείχε και ως προσκεκλημένος ομιλητής, με περισσότερες από 200 παρουσίες, σε εθνικά και διεθνή συνέδρια. Είναι κριτής σε 30 επιστημονικά περιοδικά του εξωτερικού, ενώ υπήρξε μέλος Νοσοκομειακών και Περιφερειακών Επιτροπών του ελληνικού Υπουργείου Υγείας (ΠΕΣΥ, ΕΟΦ) και Παιδείας (ΔΟΑΤΑΠ, ΙΚΥ). Τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια είναι αρχισυντάκτης στο περιοδικό Φαρμακευτικών Επιστημών «Φαρμακευτική» (Scopus). Εχει λάβει βραβεία και διακρίσεις. Ανάμεσα σ αυτά, από το 1997 είναι μέλος της New York Academy of Sciences και της American Association for the Advancement of Science. Βιογραφικά του δεδομένα περιλαμβάνονται στην έκδοση χιλιετηρίδας Who’s Who in the World, (2000) ενώ το 2006 συμπεριελήφθη, στη διεθνή λίστα Leading Scientists in the World. Το 2023 διετέλεσε Guest Editor στο περιοδικό Molecules και το 2026 Honorary Chairman/speaker στο 18th Annual World Cancer Congress. Το 2021, έλαβε Τιμητική Διάκριση από το Πρυτανικό Συμβούλιο του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Αττικής (ΠαΔΑ), για το συνολικό ακαδημαϊκό και εκπαιδευτικό του έργο.
