ClimEmpower: Developing educational resources and practical tools for climate change awareness and resilience
Frederick University and its research teams are involved in the development and implementation of education programmes and campaigns on climate change adaptation, risks, impacts, mitigation and early warning.
One example is the accessible educational material developed through the ClimEmpower project, which illustrates climate change risks and presents potential technological, nature-based and societal adaptation options and strategies. The material also draws on best practices and successful climate adaptation approaches from EU-funded projects and regions with a higher adaptive capacity.
Beyond scientific publications, the ClimEmpower project places strong emphasis on translating research findings into accessible, practical tools that support education, awareness and climate-informed decision-making.
The ClimEmpower EU-funded project aims to empower five South-European regions which are highly affected by Climate Change. In Cyprus, the project is implemented by ISTOS Center, a Frederick University Research Unit led by Professor Petros Christou and the Troodos Development Agency (ANET).
The Troodos region is one of the areas selected to serve as a case study to activate and enhance its potential for addressing the climate change challenge. The collaboration between ANET and the ISTOS Center connected scientific research with local knowledge and supported the development of practical resources for communities, decision-makers and younger audiences.
As part of this effort, an educational guide has been developed an educational guide has been developed to raise climate and wildfire awareness among children aged 10–14. The 33-page Fire Detective Guide introduces young readers to the science of wildfires through age-appropriate explanations and engaging activities. It explores how wildfires ignite and spread, how weather and climate change influence fire danger, the role of forest ecosystems, and the importance of prevention, preparedness, safe behaviour and post-fire recovery. The guide, developed by the ISTOS Center research team and the ClimEmpower coordination team, is being disseminated to children in Cyprus through educational events. Download the guide here (Learning Units > Learning guides and presentations).
The ClimEmpower project has developed a range of additional educational resources, including Knowledge Bites, learning guides and educational materials such as factsheets and infographics, addressing climate change risks, adaptation, and resilience.
These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to making climate knowledge more accessible to younger generations and the general public.
ClimEmpower is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under Grant Agreement No. 101112728.
