in Research & Innovation

The Michael Frederickou Excellence Awards in Research & Innovation recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions in advancing the University’s strategic priorities in research and innovation.

Strategic Themes:

Awards will be granted across the following themes:

• Overall Impactful Research Activity
Awarded to individuals or research teams with outstanding research performance, demonstrated through high-quality academic publications, strong impact factors, and the successful attraction of international collaborations and competitive funding.

• Significant Improvement in Research Activity
Awarded to individuals or research teams who have demonstrated substantial progress in their research performance, including notable increases in academic publications and/or success in securing international collaborations and research funding.

Eligibility Criteria & Eligible Candidates

• For the Overall Impactful Research Activity and Significant Improvement in Research Activity themes, eligibility applies to individual researchers and research teams.
Selection will be based on the evaluation of research activity data available through the Research & Innovation Service and Scopus, and will be conducted by a designated evaluation committee.

• Entrepreneurial Initiatives
Awarded to initiatives that demonstrate excellence in innovation, industry collaboration, and societal impact, aligned with the University’s mission to foster entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer.

Eligibility Criteria 

1. Demonstrated Innovation / Novelty
- The initiative introduces a new or significantly improved product, service, process, or approach.
- Clear link to research, knowledge, or expertise developed at the university.

2. Tangible Outcomes & Progress
Evidence of real achievements within the year, such as:
    o Prototype, MVP, or deployed solution
    o Signed collaboration agreements
    o Funding secured (public or private)
    o IP filed (if relevant)
    o Startup/spin-off creation

3. Engagement with External Stakeholders
Active collaboration with:
    o Industry partners
    o Public sector bodies
    o NGOs or community organizations

4. Impact Potential (Economic and/or Societal)
Clear current or expected benefits, such as:

     o Market potential, job creation, or investment attraction
     o Societal/environmental improvements
     o Contribution to policy, practice, or community wellbeing

Eligibility Candidates

• For the Entrepreneurial Initiatives theme, applications are open to researchers, academic staff, alumni, and students.

Procedure
The nomination and selection process varies by award category, as outlined below.

• For the Overall Impactful Research Activity and Significant Improvement in Research Activity themes, awardees will be identified through an internal selection process based on research activity data available through the Research & Innovation Service and Scopus.

• For the Entrepreneurial Initiatives theme, interested applicants are invited to submit their application by completing the relevant application form no later than Sunday, 31 May 2026.
