Frederick University welcomes HADES Collaboration to Cyprus
From atomic nuclei to neutron stars: Our University's Cyprus Nuclear Physics Laboratory, led by Professor Yiannis Parpottas, is organizing the HADES Collaboration meeting, to be held in Larnaca, Cyprus from from 12 to 16 October 2026.
Prof. Parpottas is also representing Frederick University on the HADES Collaboration Board.
The HADES Collaboration brings together 18 universities and research institutes from seven European countries. Its experiments are conducted at the SIS18 accelerator of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany - an internationally leading Centre for heavy-ion research.
During the 5-day meeting, 54 presentations in 11 scientific and technical sessions will address the latest experimental results, advances in data analysis, detector upgrades and priorities for future experiments.
Meetings of the Collaboration Board, Technical Board and young collaboration members will also help shape the next steps of this international research effort.
GSI’s achievements extend from the discovery of six new chemical elements to the development of pioneering cancer radiotherapy using carbon ions - demonstrating how fundamental research can expand our understanding of nature while delivering benefits to society.
With more than 19 years of participation in HADES, the Cyprus Nuclear Physics Laboratory contributes to this shared pursuit of knowledge.
Hosting the collaboration in Cyprus highlights Frederick University’s sustained contribution to international nuclear physics and Cyprus’s active role in research at the frontiers of science.
