
Frederick University to Host International Atomic Energy Agency

Frederick University announces the organization of the Regional Workshop of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will take place from June 30 to July 4, 2025, at the Radisson Beach Resort hotel in Larnaca.
This is a high-profile conference with the participation of leading experts from more than 17 countries, officially approved by the IAEA to represent their nations. These experts are active in the safe and peaceful applications of nuclear technology and education.
The conference is titled “Industry – Academia – Government Cooperation for Capacity Building in Nuclear Education” and is hosted by the Republic of Cyprus. Frederick University is responsible for organizing the event, through the Cyprus Nuclear Physics Lab, headed by Professor Yiannis Parpottas. Frederick University maintains international collaborations and research activity not only in fundamental nuclear physics but also in nuclear applications in medicine and in measuring natural environmental radioactivity, aiming to protect public health.
Welcoming addresses will be delivered by the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Skourides; the Vice-Rector for Research, Development and International Relations of Frederick University, Professor Michael Komodromos; Professor Yiannis Parpottas; and a representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The conference will focus on the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear technology in fields such as medicine, environmental protection, and industry. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and apply best practices from their respective countries, with the aim of enhancing cooperation between academia, industry, and governmental organizations.
Professor Y. Parpottas stated: "The selection of Cyprus by a globally renowned organization such as the IAEA demonstrates the international community’s trust in our country, enhancing its scientific significance in a particularly critical field. The need for structured education is a key factor for the further advancement of sectors utilizing nuclear techniques for peaceful purposes. Such an effort requires close collaboration among universities, industry, and governments, which is precisely what this conference aims to promote."
Nuclear techniques for peaceful purposes are utilized for progress in numerous sectors, such as medicine and biomedical sciences, agriculture, natural gas extraction, geology, metallurgy, spectrometry, food safety, environmental monitoring and protection, climate change research, as well as archaeology, dating methods, and space sciences.
